Drew Linton
Aged 72.
Died 20th May 2007.
Place of Residence: Kirkcaldy.
Drew was tragically killed in a road traffic accident on the morning of Sunday 20th May.
Drew was born on 30th June 1934, as the youngest of 5 sons to David and Elizabeth. He attended Abbotshall Primary School and Kirkcaldy High School, at which time he was a keen member of the Boys Brigade.
On leaving school he became an apprentice painter & decorator with Nicholsons. His spell as a painter was interrupted with his 2 years National Service with the RAF. On returning from the RAF he returned to painting until 1959, when he joined The Fire Service.
In 1957, he married Maureen and they had 2 children, Carol & Andrew.
In the late 60's he became a member of the Kirkcaldy Folk Club. Many of today’s entertainers like Billy Connelly, Barbara Dickson, Archie Fisher & Hamish Imlach started their career at the folk club, and would often end up on Drews living room floor on the Monday morning after going for a late night 'coffee' after the club had finished.
In the late 60's he was introduced to ice hockey when his son Andrew started to play. He would often accompany Andrew to frequent trips away with the Fife Flyers, a team which his son Andrew Excelled in, where he would partake in plenty of 'Bantering' and 'bevvying'. He remained a keen follower of the sport until Andrew was forced to retire through injury.
Another of Drews passions were the Great Highland Bagpipe. He was delighted when he managed to persuade his grandson Robert to take up the pipes, and when he joined his local pipe band, Kirkcaldy & District PB, he became a regular follower of pipe bands and pipe music. This struck a chord in Drew and he shown immense pride in his grandson. So much that he bought a set of bagpipes, which he declared were always his own, but he in fact let Robert 'borrow' them to allow him to play in the band. Drew was very influential to Roberts development within the band. He became the resident sound engineer, recording every contest the Robert played in from Solo, to band. He also showed a great amount of support to Roberts piping.
Drew was a member of Bowhill Peoples Burns Club for over 20 years. When his good friend Bob Shepherd started decorating the venue for burns suppers and other special functions, Drew volunteered to help. On the occasions that Bob mentioned to Drew that he might like to climb the ladders and staple the tartan in place himself, Drew maintained his role as 'artistic director' was to stay on the floor and insure it was being done to his high standards. He would also take great delight in pointing out that the length of tartan that anyone else had fixed "weren't quite right!"
His passion over the last few years of his life was going on cruise, which he did 2 or 3 times a year, often on the same ship. He would often be found waiting on the doorstep of the travel agents on the same day a cruise would be due to go on sale, waiting for them to open. He made many new friends on the ship, both passengers and staff alike, and was often invited to sit at the Captains table. He introduced a burns supper on the New Years cruises, where he would perform the address to the haggis. This has now become a part of the New Year program.
Drew will be sorely missed by both friends and family alike. They weren't ready to say goodbye, but find comfort that he will be in a happy place with the favourite woman in his life, his Beloved Mother.
Rest In Peace Drew.
